Trade in Your Treasures
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21
Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:32-34
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told us that our hearts follow our treasures, and that true disciples are more concerned about storing up treasures in Heaven than on Earth. In Luke’s version of the sermon Jesus actually challenges us to sell our possessions so that we can give to the poor.
This year, in place of a harvest or Christmas offering we are launching an initiative called “Trade in Your Treasures.” We’re taking Jesus at his word and trusting Him to reshape our hearts around the mission of his kingdom as we trade in things that we treasure so that others in Springfield may eat. All proceeds from this initiative will go toward food ministries here in Springfield.
Listed below are several ways that you can participate, but first of all spend some time in prayer reflecting on Matthew 6:19-34 and Luke 12:32-34 and then pray and ask God to lay a specific response on your heart.
There are two goals for this project. One is to provide food for people in need. Second, we want God to orient our hearts around Jesus and his Kingdom, loosening our grip on material possessions, and tightening our grip on Heaven.
We hope you will choose to participate!

- Bring in something of value that you treasure and place it on or around the table at the front of the sanctuary. We will sell the item for you and commit the funds to this project.
- Sell something that you value on your own and donate the funds to this project.
- Write a check, give cash, or use PushPay to donate an amount equal to something that you treasure and commit it to his project. A box for cash and checks is on the table at the front of the sanctuary.
